about

In the years before I started honing my craft as an audio engineer, I released multiple Albums and EPs that, while boasting impressive songwriting, suffered from terrible engineering choices. Over the past few years, I have begun to recreate much of this old material with the purpose of giving the songs that I adored heavily the proper treatment they have deserved. "Obelisk" is the very first album to do so, and I am excited to finally be releasing it.

"Obelisk" started out as an experiment between myself and long-time friend and musician, Evan Jones. Due to my inability to record drums, we decided to record an hour-long session of improvised jams, using only room microphones to capture the session. Later, I would re-record my material and program Evan's drum parts, culminating in a four-song EP titled "Obelisk" Due to the time constraints of my joining the military service, this process was done in a little over one week. This, coupled with my inexperience as an engineer, led to a recording I had a great passion for but did not feel confident about it representing where I was as a musician and an engineer.

During the long process of mixing and mastering "Precognitive", I set out to re-record "Obelisk". However, during the Precognitive sessions, I realized there were a few songs that were not going to fit the narrative of "Precognitive", so I began to repurpose them to be featured in "Obelisk". Additionally, I recorded two new tracks for the album. While this may sound like a Precognitive B-Sides", this is not the case; this album flows naturally and beautifully for one containing songs coming from many different periods of my life.

Tracks 1, 2, 4, & 8 were all originally featured on the Obelisk EP. Tracks 3 and 6 were ones not used in the Precognitive sessions and tracks 5 & 7 were songs recorded specifically for this album.

This album is a testament to the introspection that musicians and engineers have when they look back on the past. To deconstruct, analyze, and recreate these songs provided so much insight into who I was and who I am currently as both of these things. Furthermore, this album is an even bigger testament to my friendship with Evan, who has been nothing short of a great friend and has always been overwhelmingly passionate about Theos.

Cheers,

Richard
